| Since
1989, GREAT members and volunteers have removed hundreds of tons
of trash from the Grand River and other Jackson County water resources.
Local trash companies, county and city parks commissions, and other
businesses have provided resources which have greatly aided this
effort.
Some
volunteers work from shore, while others paddle or wade with a canoe
to place debris in. GREAT provides waders, gloves, rakes, grabber
tools , and trash bags as needed. Afterwards, a boxed lunch is provided
to all participants.
Other
volunteers place badges on storm city storm drains reminding local
citizens that these drains lead directly to the Grand River.
Our
efforts are also part of the Alliance for the Great Lake's annual
adopt a beach program, the worlds largest cleanup! Since the annual
event began in 1991, the Lake Michigan Federation has coordinated
over 20,000 volunteers in Michigan. The cleanups have helped to
remove approximately 109,000 pounds of trash left behind. They have
also educated hundreds of communities about the problem with trash
on our beaches and in our waterways. This event is making a real
difference! |
